DIY Mobility Wheelchair Steps 1 > 5

STEP 1

 Image

Place the valve at about the 3 o’clock position or the 9 o’clock position. THIS IS IMPORTANT because you will be installing approximately 250ml into the tyre or tube and there isn’t much space! You will need to lift the chair slightly and support it so that the bottom of the tyre is not squashed flat, this will allow more space for the liquid.

Use the valve key provided to remove the valve from the tyre, be careful to keep it safe! The tyre will deflate

If you have trouble using the valve tool, then take a look at the end of the next step (2) which may help.

STEP 2

 Image

Gently pull out the black top of the bottle, a tube will come out with it. Once fully extended, remove the black top. The tube will fit snugly overt the valve stem, if it appears a little loose, then simply cut of a short length with scissors.

You can use the tube that has just been cut off, to help make the use of the valve removing tool a little easier. Just insert the valve tool into one end of the tube, it will fit very tightly and will extend the length of the tool to allow easier removal of the valve stem.

STEP 3

 Image

Fit the tube over the valve stem and squeeze the bottle.

Gently rotate the tyre to help distribute the fluid.

Install 250ml (half the bottle) per large tyre (*)

You will see a scale on the side of the bottle which indicates how much liquid has been installed. The scale is graduated in 125ml, 250ml, 375ml and 500ml intervals. One 500ml bottle is sufficient for both large rear wheels in all mobility wheelchairs. If you have small pneumatic tyres on the front of your chair (most have solid tyres) then you will need to purchase additional ShieldWell product, these small tyres will require 125ml of product each.

(*) If you are only installing ShieldWell into a chair that has small pneumatic tyres on the rear, then you only need to install 125ml into each tyre.

STEP 4

Remove the tube (replace the black top to prevent spillage).

Replace the valve with the tool provided.

Remove any spilled liquid with a little water.

Re-inflate the tyre to the correct pressure, most tyres run on approximately 28 to 34 PSI, but check with your dealer if you are unsure.

STEP 5

Repeat appropriate steps for each of the tyres.

Dispose of the empty bottle safely and with consideration for the environment.
